The story takes place in the southeast Korean kingdom, Silla, which has been expanded by the late King Jinheung.(The entire first 50 episodes spans the political and oftentimes physical battle between Mishil and the Royal Family). An aristocrat named Mishil, whose power could rival a king&#;s influence, desires to be queen. She  has usurped part of the power from the Royal Family by convincing the people of the nation that she is Heaven&#;s Maiden. She uses this influence to gain followers in the court so that she can eventually gain the title of Queen despite her meager blood. One opportunity comes when the wife of King Jinheung&#;s grandson, Jinpyeong, gives birth to twin girls. Because of Mishil, King Jinpyeong had to abandon one of this twin daughters because it was prophecized hundreds of years previously that the Sacred Bone male heirs would diminish when a King had Twins.

According to Silla&#;s history, Lady Mishil was a lover to some Pungwolijus, and a concubine to the three kings of Silla. She was one of the most important figures in the Kingdom&#;s history.

She was a daughter of a Lord named Mijinbu, with her father&#;s mother being princess Samyeop, daughter of king Beopheung (Note: please don&#;t be discouraged by the confusing names! I do not know them that much as well, but you must continue to read about this interesting Lady Mishil. *giggles*) . Her mother was the Lady Myodo, sister of the queen mother Sado , a concubine of king Jinheung. With these relations, Mishil gained the qualifications of being a &#;jinggeol&#; a noble within the bone rank system or in simple words, something like the second rank after the main members of a royal family.

She became powerful due to her relations with several Pungwolijus that time : she&#;s a wife of Lord Sejong(6th pungwoliju) ,a

According to the Hwarang Segi, she was a concubine to several kings and, along with her aunt Queen Sado, played an instrumental role in dethroning King Jinji. However, it has been questioned whether Misil was truly a historical figure, as she is only mentioned in the Hwarang Segi, and not in the historical texts Samguk Sagi or Samguk Yusa.
