Our history
A building in need of love and a longing for a different meeting place.
In , the School of Architecture relocated from its brutalist building near Engelbrektskyrkan to the KTH Campus on the opposite side of Valhallavägen. The property owner, Akademiska Hus, aimed to maintain the building as a hub for learning and innovation. Their vision was to create a prototype for the workplaces of the future – an experimental space designed for the needs of a changing world.
The project was entrusted to Richard Hammarskiöld and Johan Almquist. With extensive experience within the creative industries, they recognized the value of collaboration and networking. However, they also saw the need for a space that could naturally foster creativity and innovation – bringing together emerging talent and established companies. This vision led to the concept of a house dedicated to food, fashion, media, and music, where business, academia, and the city could intersect and contribute.
When A house took over the former School of Architecture, the building had remained largely untouched since the s. As renovations began, the move-in was gradual, with the team occupying small sectio

Et af hans værker var dette typiserede A-hus, sommerhus, der formentlig er opført i flere versioner rundt om i landet. Eksemplaret her står i Hornbæk og er opført i
A-huset er ikke Dombernowskys opfindelse, men en bygningstype, der kendes generelt for dets konstruktive enkelthed, hvor spærkonstruktionen ligner et stort A. Spærret står direkte ned på husets fundament, hvilket overflødiggør en bærende ydervæg, som man normalt ser på mere almindelige hustyper.
Nu vil nogen måske indvende, at dette hus da har ydervægge&#;. og ja, det er korrekt, men faktisk blev huset i opført med en spærkonstruktion, der stak uden for ydervæggene. Den del af husets konstruktion er blevet fjernet på et tidspunkt. Man kan se husets oprindelige udseende på tegningerne nederst i indlægget.
Noget af det der fascinerer mig, og sikkert også mange andre ved A-husene, er deres arkitektoniske enkelhed og konstruktive logik. Der er noget næsten urhytteagtigt over arkitekturen. De er som store telte med åbne gavle.

Over the past decade, Slakthusområdet has transformed into a hub for food and culture enthusiasts, with popular venues like SOLEN, Hosoi, Bar Montan, Fållan, and Slaktkyrkan drawing visitors on evenings and weekends. Here, A house is creating a new meeting place for creative businesses, focused on design, drinks, food, and music.
Börshuset has a long-standing history in Slakthusområdet. Since its inauguration in , the building has served as everything from a meat exchange and telegraph station to a bank, police station, post office, hotel, and restaurant. A house has uncovered the building’s original soul, now offering creative coworking in a space that echoes a unique “Meaty Art Nouveau”.
